Málaga, España

Continuing my series of our trip to Spain in May, it’s time for the relaxing portion of the trip. We did have a fairly relaxing time in Madrid our first few days, but we built in five days in Málaga without many plans and that worked great! It was so relaxing and we enjoyed such fabulous food, friendly service and a new museum too. Nos encanta Málaga (we love Málaga) 🤗

We took the train from Granada and arrived in Málaga mid-afternoon. Upon checking into our hotel the gentleman at reception said “I’m so sorry, but we don’t have a deluxe room available. But we do have a junior suite, would like that room?” Um, wow!! Of course we’d love that room. I wrote about this in my first post about our trip and, if you’re interested, you can click on the link and view the photos of that lovely room. One interesting thing about that room was that it was on the first floor (second floor in the U.S.) so we could hear many things going on outside. Not far from our room were trash and recycling bins and we got to see close-up how the city empties them. A truck comes at least once a day in the late afternoon and pulls each bin out of the ground, dumps its contents and then puts it back. Our first night I was awakened at 1:00 a.m. by another noise. When I looked out the window I saw another truck with a long hose and a workerperson was cleaning the streets. Fascinating! I’m not sure if that is done every day because I only heard and saw it that first night. And of course we’d hear the revelers going by because our room is on a very travelled street and square, just down the street from the cathedral.

In this overview post I’m going to break down the photos into sections. First up are various Málaga scenes. Click on any photo to open the gallery to see a larger image and to read the captions.

Here’s a fun story from our time there and a little notice to anyone wanting to mail things in Spain these days. Hubby wanted to write postcards and we bought a handful from one store. Another day we were out and about and stopped into a store that had tapones (corks for wine bottles) and he found some more postcards to buy there too. Upon checking out the gal asked me if we needed stamps and gosh, yes we did, thanks! We told her we needed 13 stamps and she told us we should put the written cards in the green box outside her store. We weren’t ready to mail them and this shop wasn’t terribly near our hotel so I added “or we can mail them at our hotel” and she gave me a strange look. Hubby needed a few more stamps so he bought those from a tabacco shop near our hotel but those looked a little different than the others. He did ask at hotel reception if these stamps would work and was told yes. When we got home only a couple of people thanked him for their postcards and were likely ones with the tobacco stand stamps. So I did some googling and learned that there is now another way to mail things in Spain, Postby.ME which use those green mailboxes! Hubby got messages from the rest of the people he mailed postcards to just last week! I had already written off the roughly $30 between the cards and the stamps thinking those odd stamped postcards would never get mailed. We were so happy that the postcards did actually arrive!

Next, the fabulous food and drink we enjoyed.

Here are some port photos. Hubby kept going up to the rooftop of our hotel and one day he saw this great sailboat docked so we went down to look at it. He had hoped to see it leave the port, alas, he was too late and it was gone. But what a cool boat that was!

Finally, a couple of sunset photos from the rooftop of our hotel. Málaga is so beautiful. The weather was great, the people are so friendly and we had such a nice and relaxing time. Exactly what we needed. Hasta la próxima Málaga la bella.

  1. That’s our city! It looks like you did it well. It must look so different to you all these years later. I can’t believe how much it’s changed in the 13 we’ve been here. Exceptional photos.

    1. Thanks! Yes, I think it’s much more crowded now than when we first visited in 2010. But then, we’ve been there at different times of the year. It does seem like more cruise ships come and go with more people dismebarking to check out the city. We saw many ship groups. So many…..still such a beautiful city and we love it!
