Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanic Garden

To escape from the news, how about a summary and photos of a beautiful place to visit: the L.A. Arboretum and Botanic Garden.

We’re loving how many things there are to do here in Los Angeles. Early last month we visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. If you missed that post, you can check it out at this link. At the end of March we checked out the L.A. Arboretum and Botanic Garden. What a beautiful place filled with trees, plants and flowers from all over the world.

We chose a sunny, warm day for our adventure and spent about an hour and a half walking amongst beautiful flowering trees, cacti, flowers and even peacocks. Since I’ve been away from Los Angeles for decades it feels like a whole new education in the flora and fauna here and it’s so fun! I am loving exploring my new digs.

One could conceivably walk around the 127 acre botanic garden. But it was a rather warm morning so we only saw half of what is there. They have a tram that costs $8 that tours the entire grounds, but it wasn’t running that day. I’m going to go back and take the tram tour another time and check out what we didn’t see.

First off are the cactus and aloe plants:

As soon as we entered we heard what sounded like a sick cat meowing. We learned on our way out that sound comes from the peacocks. They were so beautiful!! But they advise you to stay at least 10 feet away from them and don’t feed them either.

The remaining photos are of bamboo plants, a waterfall and other views. Of particular interest is the Queen Anne cottage in the historic section of the gardens. This house was used in the intro for the old television show Fantasy Island.

If you’re in Los Angeles and enjoy nature and plants and birds, do check out the L.A. Arboretum and Botanic Garden. Speaking of birds, they state that they’ve spotted over 260 species of birds at the Arboretum. They also have an up-to-date checklist of birds seen in the garden you can check out on their website before you go.

We really enjoyed our small adventure and I can’t wait to go back.
