Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens

Continuing our exploration of our new digs in Los Angeles, we spent a warm spring morning at the zoo. I remember riding my bike with my best friend when we were teenagers from our houses in the middle of the San Fernando Valley to the zoo! I have pictures of that trip somewhere. The entrance has been changed and more shops and places to eat have been added. The animal areas were more familiar to me. We saw many animals and birds and at least one reptile, Reggie the alligator.

I had no idea Reggie was famous. He was allegedly released into Machado Lake and eventually captured and placed at the Los Angeles Zoo. It’s quite the story. Check it out here if you so desire.

Below is a photographic recap of our lovely morning at the zoo.

I kept wondering where the botanical gardens were and then realized it must be the trees and plants and flowers throughout the zoo. Here are some examples.

I’ve read reviews of our zoo where some say it’s small. Yes, it might be compared to other, bigger zoos. Yes, there were empty cages and areas with no animals but it was a pleasant and interesting thing to do on a weekday here in Los Angeles. There is so much to do here. I think that we shall never be bored.

  1. I especially loved the cool photo of the two legged animals on the bench. What a great shot. Thanks for sharing your trip to the zoo.
