Weekly Photo Challenge – Ephemeral

How about a bouquet of flowers?  They are so beautiful but their beauty only lasts a short time. This particular bouquet was given to me by my hubby for our 24th anniversary.  He gave them to me two days prior to the actual anniversary as I was leaving town two days afterwards.  Funny thing about this particular vase of flowers: he never tossed them out while I was gone for ten days!  Perhaps he left them there to remind him of me? That would be a nice sentiment wouldn’t it?  I’ll just hold onto that thought then :-)

National Automobile Museum – Reno, NV

The original Reno sign was moved in 1995 to welcome visitors to the museum

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Reno to continue celebrating our 21st anniversary. We had dinner at the St. Paul Grill on the day of our anniversary. Since we had some flight vouchers to use before they expired and the hotel was a great deal, we decided to take a trip for our anniversary as well later in the month.  Reno is a very special place for us as we got engaged and spent our honeymoon there.  The last time we were there was for our 10th anniversary, so, it was time to go again.

A couple of the earliest automobiles

One thing we really enjoyed the last time we were there was the Automobile Museum. It’s about a 4-5 block walk from our hotel so we picked the nicest day to take our stroll and once again we viewed the cars on display.  The museum, born from the collection of Bill Harrah (of gaming fame), houses over 200 cars that are displayed in 4 galleries.  It is like walking through the history of the automobile as you start the tour at the turn of the 20th century with myriad cars from the first two decades of automobiles. And you move through the decades up to the 60s, with a handful of cars from the 70s in the last gallery.

There were so many cars, I couldn’t photograph them all.  But I especially liked this one from the first gallery with what we labeled “pic-a-nic” baskets (channel your inner Yogi Bear) strapped to the sides of the vehicle. Later on the baskets were replaced by other contraptions to hold your belongings.

There are displays of clothing, hats, stockings and handbags appropriate for that gallery’s era.  At right is one of these displays.  I wondered if these weren’t added to appeal to folks that aren’t necessarily interested in cars, say, female partners of car fanatics perhaps? But they were also very interesting.  The museum isn’t just about cars, it does a great job of the history of the era.  Between galleries 3 and 4 are displays of some of the earliest gas pumps(below), for example, and there is music playing in each gallery that is appropriate for that gallery’s era of cars.

In between galleries are more cars displayed on period streets.  This street has cars from the 1930s and you can see the earliest gas pumps on display at the right. On the street from the 50s I noticed a few old TVs showing The Three Stooges and I Love Lucy.

In Gallery 2 there was a copper Rolls Royce.  Isn’t it stunning?

Just outside Gallery 3 sits a circa 1960s Coca Cola machine, complete with bottle opener.  I remember these machines.  In fact, I have a pic of myself when I was about 6 years old in front of a machine that looks alot like this one(at right).

I found this car(below) of particular interest since it is called the Hispano-Suiza and after reading about it I learned the company was based in Barcelona, Spain. It was originally formed by a Spanish artillery captain and a Swiss engineer.  I also learned that Hispano-Suiza united with a Spanish bank and a group of Spanish industrial  companies to form a company that led to Spain’s first mass production car maker SEAT. Below is the emblem on the grille displaying both the Spanish and Swiss flags.  And then a pic of the Hispano-Suiza 12J.

Gallery 3 houses John Wayne’s Corvette which was the 51st Corvette made in 1953:

As soon as I saw this car’s front end I knew it was a Chrysler.  My father loved Chryslers and we had several when I was a child. So, I had to snap this pic in honor of my father:

On the walk back to our hotel we passed the newer Reno sign:

And then at night:

Hubby and I had a fun long weekend in Reno and we didn’t lose the farm.  I highly recommend the National Automobile Museum not just for a break from gambling, but for the history lesson and fun eye candy, as hubby called it, it provides.

Fun in the sun and a little bit of rain – Málaga, España

Málaga captured both my husband’s and my hearts when we visited for the first time in May 2010 (my post from that trip is here: fun in the sun….). So when we got some surprise money we knew exactly how we wanted to spend it: a trip back to Spain for our 20th anniversary in March 2011. Following are the highlights from our second trip to Málaga. At left is Casa Aranda(Calle Herrería del Rey, 3), a great place for churros y chocolate and people watching.

We didn’t manage to get to the Atarazanas market while it was open this trip, but I had to get a pic of the beautiful stained glass window which we missed seeing our first time in Málaga. Admittedly this is not the best pic but at least we saw the window! And I managed to snap it just as the market was shutting down for the day.

The weather wasn’t fabulous like it was the previous May but it was fairly pleasant nonetheless.  When we landed it was close to 70 and it was in the upper 60s the entire time with a little bit of rain for our day trip to Córdoba.  We walk everywhere when we’re in Málaga and we had a nice stroll along the Paseo del Parque where there are some interesting sculptures. We saw some great tilework as well.

The bird of paradise reminds me of growing up in southern California. And, the orange trees were in bloom and oh! the aroma of orange blossoms also brought me back to my youth in California.  Such a sweet, sweet aroma wafting through the air.  Spring is a great time to visit southern Spain.
We walked all the way to Malagueta beach, we just had to put our hands/feet into the Mediterranean Sea!  We also picked up several shells to bring back home.
What visit to Málaga would be complete without at least viewing the Roman Theater and the Alcazaba behind it?  Well, none, so here are a couple of those pics. The Roman Theater dates to the 1st century.  Wow…….
Wandering musicians regaled us with their tunes while we took refreshment at El Pimpi.
One place that I read more about after our first trip to Málaga was Antigua Casa de Guardia for Malagueñan sweet wine.  We needed to check it out.  And what did we find? An old, stand-up type bar with many barrels against the wall, stacked 3 high. Wine is all that they serve too. I had jotted a couple of the names of wines that I wanted to try and confidently asked the waiter for the first one.  Yummy!! Can I have some more please?
The fun thing about this place is that it’s like the Spain that I lived in more than 30 years ago. Nothing is automated.  Our bartender(right) kept track of our bill by writing the amounts of our wines in chalk on the counter in front of us.  When the customer is done, he adds it up, the customer pays and then he wipes it clean so he can start again with a new customer.
Yep, we stumbled out of that place!  But we were very happy and full of sweet wine.
At the train station to catch our train to Madrid I saw some Picasso-esque paintings whilst waiting to go through security.
And, finally outside of the ticket taker booth waiting to board our AVE to Madrid.  Train travel in Spain is just great and so much more improved than when I lived there!  The fast trains then were the talgo trains.  I recall a couple of overnight train rides, one between Madrid and Barcelona.  It was about an 8 hour trip then and we took overnight trains to save on travel time. And did I marvel at the quick 2.5 hour trip on the AVE the previous May.  I was in awe and continue to be.  I can’t wait to travel by train again in Spain.
Au revoir Málaga.  Until we see each other again.
